Bruce, who has moved through the ranks at M&S, led the development of the retailers convenience store chain, Marks & Spencer Simply Food. Appointed to her current role in 2002, Bruce has overseen the rollout of the format including its link up with the food service company, Compass, which led to store openings at mainline railway stations and motorway services.
Today, she heads up a chain of 150 standalone food stores including 45 in high flow travel locations. The latest development for the format has seen M&S partner with BP on forecourt sites in an eight-store trial. It is the first time M&S products have been ranged alongside proprietary brands and sales are already reporting to be exceeding expectations. Further store openings are in the pipeline.
Bruce was presented with her award by srcg director, Scott Annan, who credited her with driving the Simply Food brand and maintaining its excellent store standards during
a difficult period for M&S, when senior management had been more focused on rebuilding the retailers clothing business.
Awards were also presented to other key players in the convenience sector including BP Retail, Budgens, Ginsters, United Co-operatives, Unilever and the Henderson Retail group. The awards luncheon was held at St Stephens Club, London, and hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Declan Curry.
