Battle for market share intensifies
Asda hangs on to number two slot
Asda is still holding on as Britains second largest grocery retailer, according to the latest TNS Worldpanel grocery market share figures published today.
The figures for the 12 weeks ending 21 May give Asda a 16.4% market share versus Sainsburys 16% share.
Recent aggressive price cuts have helped Asda lift its year-on-year growth rate to 4% (the highest level for the last 16 periods) and, as a result, its share decline has halted for this period.
At the same time, Sainsburys recovery continues apace. Its year-on-year growth rate has remained at a healthy 5%, which has lifted its share from 15.8% last year. However, a comparison of the Asda and Sainsbury year-on-year trends shows that the battle to be the UKs number two grocery retailer is still hotly contested.
Tesco continues to grow ahead of the market, which takes its market share to another record level 31.1%.
The Morrisons / Safeway share has now been stable for the last 12 periods so the negative impact of the store sell-offs can now be consigned to history and true retailing performance assessed going forward.
Kwik Saves share has declined from 1.8% to 0.8% as a result of sell-off of most of the outlets by the Tchenguiz consortium. Its performance has also been impacted by the growth of Lidl and Aldi, which have acquired some of the Kwik Save outlets.
