Bolland, who replaces Bob Stott, will leave Heiniken in July to take up his new role on September 1.
Sir Ken Morrison will remain as chairman but Bolland is believed to have insisted on complete executive control of the firm.
In a statement, Bolland said: "This is a great opportunity for me to head one of the UK's leading companies and I am looking forward to the challenge."
He will lead a three-year programme aimed at getting the supermarket back on its feet.
Bolland has held a number of senior roles at Heineken over the last 20 years, and was responsible for the Heineken brand strategy and the company's marketing strategy.
Morrisons also announced David Jones would retire from his roles as deputy chairman, director and senior independent director at the end of June 2006. Paul Manduca will take over as senior independent director. The Group is currently searching for the person who will replace Sir Ken Morrison as chairman and director of Morrisons after he recently announced his intention to retire by January 2008.
