Competitive pricing in UK supermarkets and the wide product choice available to consumers are making drinking at home both affordable and a real pleasure, according to a new report by market analyst Datamonitor.
Datamonitor is predicting the value of the UK take-home drinks market will grow by 15% from £10.8bn in 2005 to £12.3bn by 2010. By comparison, the on-trade will see a fall in the volume of drinks consumed, although the market value is likely to grow by 10% over the same five-year period.
The report, Escaping the Discount Trap in the Off-trade, said alcohol consumption by women would have a significant impact on off-trade volumes over the next five years and they could account for more than 40% of the market by 2010.
Datamonitor believes there is potential for further off-trade growth because the UK, with a per capita consumption of 5.72 litres of pure alcohol, is well below the European average of 6.79 litres. The UK consumption levels are expected to reach 6.03 litres in 2010, with the European average falling to 6.72 litres.
