Football fever and sunshine helps boost sales
The World Cup coupled with warm weather boosted sales at Sainsbury's.
Excluding petrol and new stores, the supermarket reported like-for-like sales up 5.7% in the 12 weeks to 17 June.
It said sales over the past fortnight had been driven by sunny days and sales of World Cup related goods.
The performance means Sainsbury's is narrowing the gap with Asda to be the UK's number two supermarket by market share.
This month figures from TNS reported Asda had a share of 16.4%, keeping Sainsbury's at number three with 16%.
Teso remained in the top spot with 31.1%.
