Top retailers scoop inaugural Quality Drink Awards

Supermarkets took almost half of the prizes in the inaugural Quality Drink Awards with Sainsbury’s, Waitrose, Aldi, Tesco and the Co-op walking away with trophies.

Sainsbury’s took the lion’s share of awards winning in soft and alcoholic categories

The awards, organised by Checkout and sister titles Harpers and Independent Retail News, were presented at the London Marriott Hotel, Grosvenor Square, during the Quality Drink Conference 2006, which was organised in tandem.

Of the supermarkets, Sainsbury's took the lion's share of awards winning in soft and alcoholic categories. The retailer's Taste the Difference brand secured three awards including Lager for its Cologne Style Lager.

Waitrose won the Fortified Wines category for its Jerezana Fino del Puerto and the Vintage Champagne award for its 1999 bubbly.

Aldi was a winner in two categories too, while Tesco and the Co-op took an award apiece with Tesco triumphing in Non-vintage Champagne and the Co-op in White Wines up to £4.99.

A Platinum Q was presented to Laphroaig, which won the Whisky award, for being the 'best of the best' of the award winners.
