Retailers continue to profit from England's success

As long as England keeps winning, so too will the retail trade

David Beckham’s match-winning free kick in the game between England and Ecudador last Saturday will have given another boost to the UK’s food and retail industry, according to the British Retail Consortium. It claims England’s continued presence in the World Cup has meant that pubs, bars, restaurants and shops have the opportunity for extra takings in the run-up to the quarter-final on Saturday.

BRC spokesman Richard Dodd said: “We believe an extra £124m will be spent on food and drink for every week England stays in the tournament."

Meanwhile, Asda has been capitalising on head-line opportunities with the announcement that it is organising a special delivery of Setlers Tums to the England team in time for the quarter final clash with Portugal.

Asda buyer Rebecca Fox said “Since the World Cup started, Setlers Tums have been flying off our shelves as the perfect hangover cure for people who have been over celebrating England’s success.

We felt it was only right that the England squad were well stocked up with this great ‘tummy churning’ remedy and we wish all the boys the best of luck against Portugal on Saturday.”
