| Over 5,000 African citris growers have benefited from the foundation |
The foundation was set up in June 2005 to raise money for South African farm workers through the sales of citrus fruit. The money has funded 25 different community initiatives involving 5,000 farm workers. This includes literacy training, IT training, health education and classes in craftwork, to enable farm workers to earn an income out of season. Due to the programmes success, Waitrose is to extend the fruits covered by the initiative to include avocados.
