UK Organic market worth £7m a week
Organic sales are booming, according to The Soil Association
Interest in organic food shows no sign of abating according to the Soil Association, as it prepares to publish its latest report on the organic market.
2005 saw a dramatic increase in UK demand with sales growing by 30% to nearly £1.6 billion in that year; a growth rate of around £7m per week.
However, it says, while supermarkets continue to supply 76% of the market, an increasing number of consumers are choosing to buy direct from producers and dedicated organic retailers resulting in even greater social and environmental benefits.
No longer a niche market, organic farming is making a very definite contribution to many rural communities and the overall sustainability of the UK's food production system.
