Dairy farmers under pressure, says cheese maker
But future is brighter than gloom mongers suggest

Dairy farmers are under serious financial pressure and many are ceasing milk production or plan to do so over the next year, according to Richard Clothier, marketing director of cheese maker Wyke Farms.
Speaking at the Nantwich International Cheese Show, 25-26 July, Clothier said: There is a trend among agricultural advisers at present to compete to be the most depressing and predict the worst industry disaster believe me, coming from a farming family, I can tell you that farmers dont need anyone to depress them. But there is a danger this trend will accelerate industry contraction, when the true picture is possibly much brighter.
As dairy farmers we have larger unit sizes and lower costs than many of our European neighbours and we have the opportunity to supply a UK dairy market that values our produce.
Clothier said the current wave of consumer interest in food provenance, farming and manufacturing techniques, was another positive.
Our family farming structure gives us a massive advantage in the eyes of the consumer, he said. Over the next year you will see us using this positive advantage in national consumer magazines and regional television.
