Co-op to launch first Fairtrade Argentine wines in UK
Money raised from sale of the wines will fund a social project
The Co-op is launching what it claims will be the first Fairtrade wines from Argentina when they are introduced on 11 September. The four wines, from the La Riojana wine co-operative, are being added to the Co-ops existing range of own-label Fairtrade wines.
La Riojana received Fairtrade accreditation in May 2006 and as part of the accreditation, the growers will receive a social premium to help renovate an old water supply in a nearby village as well as a new well and pump to ensure that each household has access to clean water.
Earlier this year, the Co-op sourced five own-label Fairtrade wines from the Du Toitskloof co-operative in the Western Cape region of South Africa.
The Co-op Fairtrade Argentine wines comprise Torrontes/Chardonnay and Bonarda/Shiraz blends at £3.99 and Pinot Grigio and Shiraz single varietals at £4.99.
