UK spirits market flat despite off-trade growth, says Diageo
Smirnoff vodka is one of spirit giants star performers over the last year
The UK spirits market is flat with the growth seen in the off-trade off-set by the continued decline of the on-trade, according to leading spirits company Diageo, which unveiled its full-year figures to June 30 today (Thursday).
Diageo said it was maintaining its market leadership in the UK and it grew spirits volumes by 2%. Total net sales were down 1% due to the continued decline in the alcoholic ready-to-drinks market, with Smirnoff Ice down 19%.
Smirnoff vodka was one of the star performers with volumes up 6% and value sales growing by 8% as UK drinkers showed no signs of vodka fatigue. Gordons Gin (up 1% in volume terms), Bells whisky (up 2%) and Blossom Hill California wine (up 13%) all grew sales over the year.
Diageo blamed increased competition from cheaper cream liqueurs in the off-trade for the 1% decline in Baileys volumes. Total Guinness sales were down 1%, although Diageo said sales grew in the second half of the year.
Total worldwide turnover grew by 9% to £7.26bn, thanks to strong performances in North America (up 7%) and other international markets (up 13%), excluding Europe, where turnover was static.
