Sainsbury's launches 'green' carrier bag

Orange will become the new green in Sainsbury's stores when recycled plastic bags replace white carriers

Sainsbury's has announced plans to replace the standard carrier bags in its stores with a new generation of orange coloured 'green' bags made from 33% recyclable material.

According to the multiple the move means that 1.7 billion old style carrier bags will disappear, saving 6,500 tonnes of plastic every year.

Sainsbury's claims the move will make it the only UK retailer to offer customers a free carrier bag with a high proportion of recycled material, as well as 10% chalk, cutting the use of raw plastic by 43%.

The multiple says the new bags will begin to appear in stores from October, and that they should have replaced the old-style white carrier bags completely by February 2007. The aim is also to increase the recycled content over the coming months.
