Asda celebrates charity link and sets new £5m target

Asda is celebrating the 10th anniversary of its Tickled Pink campaign, which raises money for breast cancer charities, Breast Cancer Care and Breast Cancer Campaign.

Ten years on...

The supermarket, which has already raised £11.4m, over the past nine years, has set a target to raise £5m in the next year.

Asda announced plans for new fundraising initiatives at a 10th anniversary party attended by Cherie Booth QC, patron of Breast Cancer Care.

Speaking at the event, Asda chief executive, Andy Bond, said: “It’s at moments like this when I feel particularly proud of being chief executive of Asda, it shows that we are more than a commercial business, that we care for people and for the community.”

Bond revealed he had been ‘grunged in yogurt’ in the retailer’s latest fundraising campaign, which is supported by Asda staff during and outside their work time.

Asda community director, Nick Burr said Asda was aiming to raise £5m this year through sales of Tickled Pink merchandise including shirt and tie sets, pyjamas, slippers, wellies, jewellery, shampoo, bubble bath, perfume, fresh flowers and yogurt.

“There’s a huge range of products that people can buy to support this worthwhile cause,” he said.

Burr added Asda planned to host a Ticked Pink Tea event on 7 October and had been challenged to raise £1m in a day. Plans were also afoot for a football challenge.

“We want to take this from a relatively small initiative to something that hits across the country,” he said.

Cherie Booth said Tickled Pink was a “wonderful partnership” and revealed how funds raised have helped expand Breast Cancer Care’s capability from 26 staff supporting 212 people 10 years ago to 150 staff handling two million requests for help and information.

“We could not do that without the funds raised by Asda colleagues,” she said. “I have absolutely no doubt Asda has the workforce to achieve this [new] target.”
