Sainsbury’s is top supermarket

2006 Retail Industry Awards winners announced

Winners announced

Sainsbury's has won the prestigious Supermarket of the Year Award in the 2006 Retail Industry Awards, organised by Checkout magazine and sister title, Independent Retail News .

Judges said the supermarket's sales-led recovery and the clearest business turnaround in the industry, firmly secured Sainsbury's with the title.

“Sainsbury's has given us permission to enjoy food,” they said. “It has made good food mainstream – you come out of Sainsbury's wanting to cook.”

The awards were presented in front of 900 guests from the food and drink industry in the Great Room at the Grosvenor House Hotel on London's Park Lane on 28 September. The black tie event was hosted by the comedian Fred MacAulay with additional entertainment from Tenors Incognito.

It was the supermarket's night as its chief executive, Justin King, took the Outstanding Achievement Award for his role in turning the supermarket around.

Sainsbury's also won the Fresh Produce Retailer of the Year category and Julie Morton, manager of Sainsbury's Hedge End, Southampton, store was crowned Store Manager of the year.

Of the other leading multiple grocers, Morrisons won the Seafood Retailer of the Year award and was highly commended in the Fresh Produce category.

Waitrose, winner of the Supermarket of the Year title in 2005 and 2004, walked off with the Fresh Flower Supermarket of the Year title.

Oil giant BP took two titles, winning the National Convenience Chain of the Year category and the Forecourt Retailer of the Year Award in the multiple category.

Majestic Wine Warehouses took the Multiple Off-Licence of the Year award, narrowly pipping Sainsbury's to the post.
