Mouton Cadet?s survey reveals UK consumers are willing to spend more on wine on Sundays
The traditional British Sunday lunch is alive and well and offering retailers the opportunity to trade up their shoppers to more premium wines, according to a survey published today. A survey by the world?s biggest selling Bordeaux AOC brand, Mouton Cadet, has revealed that Sunday lunch is not only a key wine drinking occasion for British adults, but also one for which many wine drinkers trade up to a more expensive wine than they would usually buy. These factors make it ?an ideal occasion? for retailers to promote more expensive wines such as Bordeaux, said Mouton Cadet. The online survey, with over 2,000 respondents across the UK, made the following findings: ?In spite of trends showing the growth of sales of New World brands, French wine is still favoured over Australian wine as an accompaniment to the traditional Sunday lunch in London, Wales, the East Midlands, the south-west and Northern Ireland. ?71% of respondents spend more than ?4 on wine to drink with their main Sunday meal and a quarter of Londoners spend more than ?6 on wine to drink with their Sunday lunch. Wales is in second place with 13% spending more than ?6. ?Women are twice as likely as men to trade up and spend more on wine to drink on Sunday than at other times. ?Wine is the most popular beverage at the Sunday dinner table for those aged 21-plus. |
