Co-op grows wine sales ahead of total market
Old World wines are helping the Co-op Group to outperform the total take-home wine market and to increase the average price per bottle in-store from £3.81 to £3.99 in just 12 months.
The group, which buys wine for all the co-operative societies, increased wine sales by 5.2% on volume and 6.2% on value in the year to April 2006, against a market up 2.9% and 3.5% respectively.
Wine development manager Paul Bastard said the Co-op still over-performed on the New World, which accounts for 60% of sales, but the group set itself the target a year ago of growing the Old World share.
The Co-op now offers a good deal on mid-priced Champagne every month, while gift packs were available over Christmas along with some top end Champagnes. With the minimum price of £9.99 for Champagne, you have immediately grown your average basket spend, he said.
