On-the-go snacking gets healthy
Datamonitor unveils worldwide product trends
The health trend has taken a new turn with the introduction of a heart health snack bar, indicating the on-the-go health trend is segmenting into more specific consumer health needs, according to a new report from Datamonitor.
Chewing gum, meanwhile, appears to be moving away from its traditional minty flavours in favour of some more unusual tastes.
Datamonitor's Productscan, which highlights npd trends around the world, reports on the release of a liquorice and a coffee flavoured gum, both launched by Wrigley.
An answer to British consumers demand for convenient food, which is also healthy, comes from Sainsbury's. The supermarket chain is latching onto the trend towards lighter snacking with the introduction of the Sainsbury's Taste the Difference Half a Sandwich product. Currently only available in king prawn and rocket filling, this pre-packed half sandwich may appeal to consumers craving a mid-afternoon snack; other fillings are sure to follow if the concept proves a success.
Another product aimed at the health conscious consumer is Kellogg's Smart Start Healthy Heart cereal bar, which extends Kellogg's' existing Healthy Heart brand to the growing on-the-go market. The bars, made from oat bran flakes, crisp rice, oat and fruit clusters, are marketed by the company as being 'perfect for sensible snacking', and good for the heart. Company literature on the brand states it may help lower both blood pressure and cholesterol. Heart health in a to-go format could provide the company with a winning formula.
Extending the concept of functional foods to baby products is Nestlé, which has launched the Papillas Bienestar range of functional baby foods in Spain. The range contains prebiotics, probiotics and ingredients specifically developed for babies, which are designed to relieve minor digestive problems. It comes in three flavours: Carrot, Oats and Lime Tea.
Meanwhile, Diva Chocolates has introduced a new product line in the US that may appeal to those with a sweet tooth. Its new chocolate grilling rubs are designed to season a variety of meats, providing an unusual flavour combination. The company states its chocolate range, which is infused with spices, offers consumers the opportunity to expand their chocolate-craving palate beyond the normal dessert fare.
Another field in which products with new flavour combinations and ingredients are being launched is chewing gum. Wrigley has introduced a flavoured sugar-free gum in Germany: the Black Mint variety of its Airwaves brand is flavoured with liquorice, anis and menthol. The inclusion of liquorice in the gum suggests that the substance is becoming more popular as a flavouri and that liquorice will become increasingly available in other food sectors.
In Germany Wringley has also launched a coffee flavoured gum. The Kona Creme variant of DoubleMint gum is flavoured with coffee powder and artificial ingredients, but is said to contain only a trace of caffeine. This could appeal to consumers who like the coffee taste, but who are not craving the energy fix of caffeine. The Kona branding suggests a high quality coffee experience and is unique to the chewing gum market.
